The Underground, ep. 1: Social Media Mental Health Activists

Our guest writer today, Aaqib Farhan Hossain, Dhaka, Bangladesh. June 2020.

I hate the mental health awareness communities in Bangladesh. They complain about mental health not being taken seriously while their own concept of mental health is limited to “anxiety” and “depression.”

Mental health is so much more than just “depression”. And these “listeners” have no clue. Let them have a brush with people who have schizophrenia, bipolarity, BPD, substance abuse, ptsd, hystrionics etc etc. You’ll see these “listeners” gon ghost a struggling patient like a motherfucker. Too wierd for them to handle because they’re not educated on mental health beyond the things palatable to them.

“Instagrammable” so to speak.

When was the last time one of these ‘social media mental health activists’ made a heartfelt post about schizophrenia? I guess it isn’t easy to exploit a celebrity’s mental illness for an additional 20 likes over their norm when its schizophrenia and not depression.
